About DRKNYT / Built in Detroit

Research. Strategy. Design. Technology.

DRKNYT is an independent practice built in Detroit. We help founders, operators and organizations investigate difficult questions, choose a direction and make the work concrete.

Our work includes research, strategy, brand systems, technology and evidence and advocacy support. A commission can be a clear record, a decision brief, a practical plan, an identity or a working system.

One connected practice

From evidence to direction to useful work.

  1. 01

Understand the problem and the people.

We examine the situation, the people affected and the evidence already available. The goal is a useful brief grounded in the real work.

  2. 02

    Choose a direction.

We compare approaches, explain the tradeoffs and recommend a practical next step. A useful strategy can be the complete commission.

  3. 03

Deliver the work and the next step.

We make the agreed result inspectable: research, a plan, a brand kit or a working system. The scope defines the checks, documentation and handoff.

How the company and its products fit together

DRKNYT is the practice behind the work. Its products are distinct experiences, with their own audiences, access and stages of development. A public homepage, a pilot and a working concept are different states; the work directory names the stage of each project.

The work

Client commissions and products of our own.

Our own products let us pursue questions over time. Commissions apply the same connected practice to a founder’s, operator’s or organization’s real problem. These dated website captures show different kinds of work, with each project’s current stage stated alongside it.

Public book & learning platform

The Constitution Kids

Turn a big civic idea into a story you can enter.

A time-travel adventure becomes a path into constitutional history. The wider experience connects reading with a Learning Hub and teaching resources, giving families and classrooms more than a single page about a book.

TAGD

Give the things you own a useful next move.

A lost belonging needs a way home. A packed box needs a memory. An item being passed on needs a story of its own. TAGD connects physical things to useful pages, with the owner choosing what other people can see.
